Expression 1

spacious

Having plenty of room inside so that a place feels open and comfortable.

Nuance: Spacious describes usable interior space and the experience of comfort, not simply physical size. It collocates naturally with room, kitchen, apartment, office and car.

The apartment is small from the outside, but the living room is surprisingly spacious.

We chose a spacious meeting room so everyone could move around comfortably.

Expression 2

enormous

Extremely large in size, quantity or degree.

Nuance: Enormous is a strong adjective. It can describe physical size, a very large amount or the seriousness of an abstract idea such as a mistake.

An enormous crowd gathered outside the stadium.

Correcting the error required an enormous amount of work.

Expression 3

substantial

Large or considerable in amount, value, importance or effect.

Nuance: Substantial is slightly formal and often collocates with amount, difference, improvement, investment, evidence and meal. It suggests something significant rather than merely physically big.

The company made a substantial investment in new technology.

Daily listening produced a substantial improvement in her comprehension.

Expression 4

plenty of room

More than enough space for people or things.

Nuance: Room is uncountable here and means available space, not a separate room in a building. The expression often explains why a place feels spacious.

There is plenty of room for four people and their luggage.

Move the table and we will have plenty of room to practise.

Expression 5

feel crowded

To seem uncomfortably full because too many people or objects occupy the available space.

Nuance: Crowded describes the impression created by limited free space. A physically large room can still feel crowded if it contains too much furniture.

The office feels crowded when everyone is working there.

The room looked large online, but it felt crowded with all the furniture.

Expression 6

collocation

A combination of words that native speakers commonly use together.

Nuance: Knowing meaning is not enough: natural English depends on choosing partners that normally occur together, such as spacious room and substantial improvement.

Spacious room is a natural English collocation.

Learning vocabulary through collocations makes speaking more automatic.

Expression 7

overlap

To share some meaning, features or territory while remaining different.

Nuance: When words overlap, they may both fit one situation but emphasise different aspects. Spacious and enormous can describe the same balcony from different perspectives.

The meanings overlap, but the words are not interchangeable in every sentence.

Their responsibilities overlap in several areas.

Expression 8

noticeable improvement

A positive change that is large or clear enough to be observed.

Nuance: Noticeable focuses on visibility; substantial focuses on the size or significance of the improvement. The same improvement may be both.

Her pronunciation showed a noticeable improvement after daily practice.

The brighter windows made a noticeable improvement to the room.
