Expression 1

instead of

In place of someone or something else.

Nuance: Signals replacement, not a free choice between two options. Follow it with a noun, pronoun or -ing form.

Today, I am taking the bus instead of driving.

Expression 2

running late

Behind the time originally planned or expected.

Nuance: Used for people and services. Running describes the state of the schedule, not physical running; a delay is added to the original time.

The service is running ten minutes late.

I am running ten minutes late; please start without me.

Expression 3

depart from

To leave a particular place.

Nuance: Common in travel announcements and more formal than leave. From introduces the starting place; for can introduce the destination.
