Expression 1

drop in

To make a short, informal visit, often without arranging it in advance.

Nuance: Usually suggests a casual visit. Use drop in to see someone, or drop in on someone; it is not a literal downward movement.

Hughie dropped in to see his friend Alan.

I will drop in after work.

Expression 2

feel sorry for someone

To feel sympathy for someone who is in an unhappy or difficult situation.

Nuance: This expresses sympathy, not an apology. Sorry for what I did describes regret for your own action instead.

Hughie felt sorry for the old man.

I feel sorry for anyone who has lost their home.

Expression 3

give away

To give something to someone without receiving payment.

Nuance: In this story it means donate or give freely, not lend. In other contexts, give away can also mean reveal a secret.

Hughie gave away a valuable coin.

You can give away clothes you no longer need.
