Expression 1

I've … since [starting point]

Describe a situation that began at a stated time and continues now.

Nuance: Use have or has + past participle; since introduces the starting point, not the length of time. This lesson covers continuing situations, not every use of the present perfect.

I've lived here since October 2023.

She has known her neighbour since school.

Expression 2

I've … for [duration]

Describe how long a continuing situation has lasted.

Nuance: For introduces a length such as three years. Have or has + past participle connects the situation to now; I lived there for three years instead describes a finished period.

I've worked here for two years.

We've known each other for a long time.

Expression 3

How long have you …?

Ask for the duration of a situation that is still true.

Nuance: Use How long + have/has + subject + past participle. Known is the past participle of know; answer with for + duration or since + starting point.

How long have you lived in this flat?

How long has she known her best friend?
