A Busy Day Without Saying “Busy”: 3 Better English Words

ENThat answer works, Julia, but it does not tell me what kind of busy day you are having.

ENMy morning was hectic, at lunchtime I felt overwhelmed, but this afternoon looks manageable.

ENThree words, three different pictures.

ENThat is much more useful than saying busy three times.

ENAnd that is our challenge today: hectic, overwhelmed and manageable.

ENMy phone kept ringing, two people needed urgent answers, and I had a meeting at nine.

ENSo hectic describes a period with a lot of fast, confused activity.

ENExactly.

ENA hectic morning, a hectic schedule, or a hectic week.

ENIt feels busy and slightly chaotic.

ENThen what happened?

ENAt eleven, I looked at everything I still had to do, and I felt overwhelmed.

ENNow the word describes you, not the schedule.

ENRight.

ENThe morning was hectic, but I was overwhelmed.

ENI felt that the work was too much for me.

ENDid the day improve?

ENYes.

ENI cancelled one unnecessary meeting and divided the big task into three small steps.

ENSuddenly, the afternoon felt manageable.

ENMeaning you could deal with it successfully.

ENYes.

ENNot easy, not empty, but possible to control.

ENLet us notice the difference.

ENHectic describes the situation: lots of activity, movement and pressure.

ENOverwhelmed describes a feeling: you think you cannot cope with everything.

ENAnd manageable describes something you can handle, even if it still needs effort.

ENHere is a common mistake.

ENWe normally say, “I feel overwhelmed” or “I am overwhelmed,” not “I am hectic.”

ENGood distinction.

ENA person can have a hectic day, but saying “I am hectic” sounds unnatural in most situations.

ENAnd manageable is often used for work, costs, pain, schedules or problems: “The workload is manageable.”

ENNow pronunciation.

ENListen to the stressed part: HEC-tic.

ENHEC-tic.

ENA hectic morning.

ENNext: over-WHELMED.

ENThe final letters E-D make a /d/ sound.

ENOverwhelmed.

ENI felt overwhelmed.

ENAnd MAN-age-able.

ENFour syllables, with the stress at the beginning.

ENManageable.

ENThe task is manageable.

ENLet us put them into one slow sentence.

ENSituation one: your calendar is full, messages arrive constantly, and you run from one meeting to another.

ENHectic.

ENYes: “It has been a hectic day.”

ENSituation two: you have so many responsibilities that you do not know where to begin.

ENOverwhelmed.

EN“I feel overwhelmed by everything I need to do.”

ENSituation three: the project is difficult, but you have enough time, help and a clear plan.

ENManageable.

EN“The project looks manageable now.”

ENOne final speaking challenge.

ENThink about tomorrow.

ENComplete this sentence aloud: “My day will be blank because blank.”

ENYou could say, “My morning will be hectic because I have three appointments.”

ENOr, “My workload is manageable because I have a clear list.”

ENAnd if you feel overwhelmed, say it.

ENNaming the feeling clearly can help you ask for support.
